The Last of Us Season 2 Sets Production Start Date

The Last of Us series creator Craig Mazin revealed that production for the second season of the hit HBO post-apocalyptic drama will commence on February 12, 2024.

Now that the Hollywood strikes have already concluded, a slew of shows have also resumed production. During Variety’s A Night in the Writer’s Room, writers from various popular television shows graced the event, including Charlotte Stoudt, Nathan Fielder, Sonja Warfield, Fred Golan, Deborah Cahn, and Michael Dinner.

Besides The Last of Us resuming its production next year, Stoudt has also disclosed she has been in the writer’s room for “four weeks,” hoping to commence shooting The Morning Show Season 4 as soon as possible. On the other hand, the second season of Golan’s Silo is already in development, while Cahn’s The Diplomat will begin production for Season 2.

The exact release window for The Last of Us Season 2 remains unknown at this point, considering it hasn’t started production yet. But with Mazin confirming the start date, it’s only a matter of time before fans of the show can finally get a release date for the highly anticipated second season of the Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey-led zombie series.

Moreover, given that the show will commence production in February 2024, it will most likely premiere in 2025.

What is The Last of Us about?

Based on Naughty Dog’s 2013 video game of the same name, The Last of Us follows an unlikely pair, Joel and Ellie, as they navigate the fungus-infected world.

The synopsis for The Last of Us reads: “After a global pandemic destroys civilization, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity’s last hope.”

Apart from Mazin, original game writer Neil Druckmann has also served as one of the show’s writers and directors. The first season stars Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Nick Offerman as Bill, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Anna Torv as Tess, Rutina Wesley as Maria, and Storm Reid as Riley Abel, among others.

No details have been revealed yet about Season 2’s new cast members, though Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You) has been rumored to play Abby Anderson. The second season is also expected to cover the video game’s sequel, titled The Last of Us Part II.
