Why Loki Season 2 Had No Post-Credits Scene

The absence of a post-credits scene in Loki Season 2 raises the question of whether it is the titular character’s swan song in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although it is a customary tradition in the MCU to tease what viewers can expect next, executive producer Kevin Wright explains why they didn’t bother including one when Season 2 concluded.

A post-credits scene has been something that MCU has been practicing since Iron Man debuted back in 2008, heightening up anticipation about what could happen next. So, when Loki Season 2 credits rolled without previewing at least a brief post-credits scene, fans were — of course — wondering about God of Mischief’s future in the MCU.

Is Loki Season 2 the titular character’s last MCU outing?

During an interview with Collider, Wright explains that the character’s journey throughout the second season of the Disney+ show was the story they “set out to make.”

“There was never one written. There was never one shot. I would leave it at that. I think this was . . . like early at the beginning of when the show first started coming on. But the story that’s on screen is the one that we set out to make,” said Wright.

He continued, “And all of us, the writers, directors, VFX, everybody, held hands and we’re like, ‘This is what we’re doing, right? All right,’” and were in lockstep and sold it to Kevin [Feige] and everybody at Marvel and they let us do it. There was never even a conversation about setting other shows up or other movies up.”

Loki Season 1 didn’t feature a post-credits scene either, though they did announce that Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) would be returning for Season 2. But the lack of a post-credits scene in the second season doesn’t mean the anti-hero will not be coming back in the future, considering how the team behind the show established Loki’s character during Season 2.

The synopsis for Loki Season 2 reads: “The next season picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous Multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.”

All two seasons of Loki are available to stream on Disney+.
