Friends Creators Remember Matthew Perry: ‘This Truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken’

Following the untimely passing of Emmy nominee Matthew Perry, Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane have shared a joint statement along with executive producer Kevin Bright, remembering what it was like working with the late actor who made the role of Chandler Bing his own.

“It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives,” Kauffman, Crane, and Bright said in a statement (via THR). “He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.”

“We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart. We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

Matthew Perry’s Cause of Death

Last Saturday, it was reported that Perry died at his home due to an apparent drowning. According to law enforcement sources, no foul play is suspected and there were no drugs found at the scene.

Perry gained recognition for his memorable performance as Chandler Bing on the popular NBC sitcom Friends, which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. His character was known for his sardonic humor, leading him to easily become most fans’ most favorite character.

In 2021, the late actor had the chance to reunite with former co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer for Max’s Friends reunion special after nearly two decades since the sitcom had wrapped up its 10-season run. The special served as his last TV appearance.
