Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Series in the Works at Amazon MGM Studios

After over three years since it was initially announced, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo television adaptation is finally in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Veena Sud (The Killing) will serve as the showrunner, Variety reports.

The television reboot of the said franchise, based on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling psychological thriller novels of the same name, was reportedly in the works back in 2020, although no showrunner was attached to head up the project.

A novel best known as the “Millennium Trilogy,” Larsson first released the first installment in 2005 and has since then spawned two sequels, such as The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has several adaptations

Larsson, who died in 2004, became one of the best-selling authors after his books were translated into English, inspiring a slew of movie and television adaptations featuring Girl With the Dragon Tattoo lead character Lisbeth Salander.

In 2009, the Swedish-Danish film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was released, starring Noomi Rapace (What Happened to Monday) and Michael Nyqvist (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). It is followed up with two sequels — both released in the same year — including The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.

The 2010 series, titled Millennium, starring both Rapace and Nyqvist, served as the expanded version of the 2009 film trilogy.

Moreover, in 2011, the English remake of the original version became a critical and commercial success, resonating so well with audiences that it has managed to bag several accolades. It starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. Unfortunately, the Fede Álvarez-helmed 2018 film, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, failed to live up to the legacy of the previous adaptations and was even considered the worst film in the franchise.

The plot of the upcoming television reboot remains under wraps, but Variety reported that it will be a standalone story about Lisbeth Salander.
