The Crown Creator Addresses Diana’s Ghost in Final Season

One of the major storylines from the sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown will be the death of Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), Princess of Wales. The Daily Mail revealed that The Crown will include a scene where Diana’s ghost will speak to Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) after her death.

The decision to use the ghost of Diana has already garnered plenty of outrage online. The Crown’s creator, Peter Morgan, is setting the record straight on Diana’s ghost, which is not meant to be supernatural.

“I never imagined it as Diana’s ‘ghost’ in the traditional sense,” Morgan said to Variety. “It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively.”

What to Expect in The Crown Season 6?

“A relationship blossoms between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences,” the official logline reads. “Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion. As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate.”

The Crown is centered around the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, spanning nearly 60 years from the late 1940s into the early 21st century. Imelda Staunton reprises her role as Queen Elizabeth II from Season 5. Previous actresses to play Queen Elizabeth include Claire Foy (Seasons 1-2) and Olivia Colman (Seasons 3-4).

The final season’s ensemble includes Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Dominic West, Elizabeth Debicki, Khalid Abdalla, Salim Daw, and Bertie Carvel.

The Crown is created and principally written by Morgan. The critically acclaimed Netflix series has won 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series for Season 4. The Crown Season 6 will be divided into two parts: Volume One consisting of four episodes streams on November 16, 2023, with the remaining six episodes in Volume Two streaming on December 14, 2023.
