Issa Rae’s Insecure is the first HBO show to land on Netflix.
According to Deadline, all five seasons of Insecure are now available to stream on Netflix. The platform move was first announced in June 2023 after the two streaming giants struck a deal to air certain HBO content on Netflix in the United States.
What HBO shows are coming to Netflix
In addition to Insecure, Netflix announced four other HBO shows will also be added to its library in the near future. These titles include Band of Brothers, Six Feet Under, The Pacific, and Ballers. Additionally, True Blood will soon begin streaming on Netflix outside of the United States.
Co-created by Rae and Larry Wilmore, Insecure is a comedy-drama series based on Rae’s web series Awkward Black Girl. Exploring the Black female experience in the modern world, Insecure follows two women, Issa (Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji), as they attempt to navigate their personal lives, relationships, and careers while also dealing with various hardships and struggles. The series, which began in 2016 before it ended Dec. 2021, received numerous Emmy Award nominations during its run, including acting nominations for both Rae and Orji and a win for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Comedy Series in 2020. Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, and Kendrick Sampson also star in the show.
The agreement between HBO and Netflix is part of a co-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max. HBO has rarely licensed original shows to other streaming platforms or television networks in the past; however, CEO David Zaslav has begun shopping certain shows around in an attempt to boost the company’s finances.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery allowed series such as Westworld, Raised by Wolves, and The Nevers to stream on Roku and Tubi for free after they were canceled and then removed from HBO Max.
Insecure is available to stream now on Netflix.
