Emilia Clarke Secret Invasion

Emilia Clarke on Keeping Secrets for Marvel: ‘It’s So Much Easier’

The biggest threat to Marvel is not superhero fatigue, but spoilers. Marvel’s innate ability to withhold information from the public is one of its crowning achievements. If there’s an actor who knows a thing or two about spoilers, it’s Emilia Clarke. Before joining Marvel for Secret Invasion, Clarke starred as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, another series where actors were trusted to stay quiet on major plot points. Compared to Game of Thrones, however, Clarke has found it “easier” to keep secrets for Marvel.

“I’ll tell you what, it’s so much easier now because whenever it comes up or people want to ask, you just get to be like, ‘Dude, Marvel. I can’t say anything,'” Clarke told EW’s Around the Table series. “That’s just what I kept saying over and over again.”

While on Game of Thrones, Clarke explained how Marvel provided the blueprint on how to protect storylines and avoid spoilers.

“When we were doing Game of Thrones, when it started to get to the later seasons, some massive security changes happened,” Clarke said. “I was chatting with [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and they were like, ‘Marvel. We’re just learning from Marvel. Whatever Marvel’s doing, we just want to do that.’ So that became, you don’t print anything — and then there was like me and Peter Dinklage being like, ‘I need it on paper! I can’t learn my lines without it being on paper!'”

Who is Involved in Secret Invasion?

In Secret Invasion, Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury, the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. who investigates a rebel group of Skrulls attempting to seize control of Earth. Returning MCU cast members include Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Clarke plays G’iah, Talos’ daughter.

“Set in the present-day MCU, Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls,” the official synopsis reads. “Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”

Secret Invasion is created by Kyle Bradstreet. The first episode of the six-episode series is now available to stream on Disney+.
