Diego Luna on Getting Andor’s Tone: ‘You Have to Forget This is Star Wars’

Andor and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Diego Luna has talked about how the gritty tone of the two Star Wars projects is achieved.

As part of a Variety feature, Luna spoke with fellow Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen about their careers and being part of the franchise. When Christensen brought up the darker tone of Andor, Luna described how they get that atmosphere in a Star Wars project.

“It was something that we reminded ourselves every day on Rogue One,” Luna stated. “And on Andor, we took even further, the idea of you have to forget this is Star Wars. Tony Gilroy was very specific, always. Every time you had to explain too long what you wanted to do, he would be like, ‘There’s no room for that. It has to be simple. It has to be easy. It has to be real.’ It was a constant reminder every day. If it started to feel imposed or weird or from ‘a galaxy far, far away,’ then we were doing the wrong thing.”

Who stars in Andor?

Andor stars Diego Luna and features franchise alums Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. Additional cast also includes Star Wars newcomers Denise Gough, Stellan Skarsgård, Kyle Soller, and Adria Arjona.

Andor is executive produced by showrunner Tony Gilroy, who previously directed the reshoots for Rogue One. Gilroy was originally expected to direct three episodes, but was forced to give up the position to Black Mirror‘s Toby Haynes due to pandemic-related travel issues.
