What Are the Critics Saying about American Rust?

American Rust has an official critics rating of 27% and an average audience score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. While comparisons with Mare of Easttown were natural, most critics were disappointed with the staleness of the series. The viewers, however, mostly liked the show’s plot and setting.

John Doyle from The Globe and Mail says, “What’s lost in the dismissals is this: the series is a good thriller, albeit a subdued one, and damaged people at the end of their tether are not uninteresting figures.”

Variety’s Daniel D’Addario writes, “The plot thrives on contrivance and misunderstanding more often than human emotion, and attempts to draw out what it’s like for characters to live where they do more often seem to end in showy small-town cliché.”
