Alison Brie Recalls ‘Heartbreak’ Over Glow Cancellation

Alison Brie’s career in Hollywood has resulted in a ton of successful roles for the actress. However, one role she still can’t quite get over is one from the Netflix series Glow.

The wrestling series, which was canceled by Netflix nearly two years ago, saw Brie star as Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder, a superstar in the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a real-life women’s professional wrestling promotion that aired in the 1980s. Speaking to Decider recently, Brie called the cancellation of the series “the great heartbreak” of her career.

“It’s the great heartbreak of my career,” Brie said. “But it will forever live on as, like, this great thing. I loved working on it — maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! — and I miss it a lot. But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show.”

While Glow was initially set to receive a fourth and final season from Netflix, the streamer ended up changing course when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Unfortunately for those working on the show, production had already begun on the fourth season when the pandemic hit, and shortly after, Netflix announced that production would no longer resume, which Brie said was shocking, but somewhat became overshadowed due to Covid-19’s effect on the world.

“Yeah, it was surprising!” Brie said of the cancellation. “But it was sort of eclipsed by the shock of everything that was happening globally. [Laughs] You know, so in a way, it was almost like it put things in perspective.”

Despite its cancellation, Glow was a fairly successful series for Netflix. The series earned 15 Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning three, including awards for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour or Less) and Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or Variety Program.
