Andor Creator Explains Star Wars Series’ Five-Year Structure

The upcoming Star Wars-based Disney+ series Andor will debut in a couple of months, and with a second season already planned, creator Tony Gilroy spoke about how the series is set to follow a five-year structure.

“The scale of the show is so huge,” Gilroy said in a recent interview with Empire on how they’ve written out and structured the show so far. “Directors work in blocks of three episodes, so we did four blocks [in season one] of three episodes each.”

According to Gilroy, that specific shooting schedule is what led to them changing the structure a bit for the planned second season of the series, with the time jumps exciting the team behind the series.

“We looked and said, ‘Wow, it’d be really interesting if we come back, and we use each block to represent a year,” said Gilroy. “We’ll move a year closer with each block’,” he says. “From a narrative point of view, it’s really exciting to be able to work on something where you do a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and then jump a year.”

Disney+’s Andor features Diego Luna as he reprises his role of Cassian Andor. Set five years before the events of Rogue One, the series will follow the adventures of the titular hero rebel spy during the formative years of the Rebellion. It will explore tales of espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire. The additional cast also includes Star Wars newcomers Denise Gough, Stellan Skarsgård, Kyle Soller, and Adria Arjona.

Andor is executive produced by showrunner Tony Gilroy, who previously directed the reshoots for Rogue One. Gilroy was originally expected to direct the three episodes but was forced to give up the position to Black Mirror‘s Toby Haynes due to pandemic-related travel issues. Production is currently underway in the United Kingdom.
