Chloé Zhao to Executive Produce Limited Series Based on Vincent Chin

Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao has joined Participant’s limited TV series based on the murder of Vincent Chin as an executive producer, according to a recent report from Deadline.

The series will tell the story of Chin, who in 1982 was assaulted at a bar and subsequently murdered by two white autoworkers because they believed Chin was Japanese. The anger due to Japan’s success in the automotive world and loss of jobs in the automotive industry led to the crime, which occurred four days before Chin’s wedding.

After the murder, Chin’s killers ended up with fairly lenient sentences of probation and minimal fines. The crime and the following trial led to outrage across America and helped shine a spotlight on the debate of racism against the Asian American community. The series is said to be the “definitive account” of the story.

“I was deeply moved by Helen’s personal connection to Vincent’s story as well as her incredibly insightful and nuanced perspective on this difficult yet inspiring story,” Zhao said. “I’m very honored to join the team and to embark on this journey together.”

The upcoming series has been developed through an exclusive agreement with the Chin estate and executor Helen Zia. It will be the only authorized telling of Chin’s story and the civil rights cases and moments that took place following it.
