David Chase on Another The Sopranos Series: ‘I’m Not Anxious To Do It’

The Sopranos creator David Chase is no stranger to the world of television, but in a recent interview, Chase said that if he were to revisit the world of The Sopranos for a third time, it would be with another movie.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter for an episode of their Awards Chatter show, Chase spoke about his recently released prequel to the iconic television series: The Many Saints of Newark. Towards the end of the talk, Chase mentioned that thanks to the success the film found on HBO’s streaming service, studios wanted Chase to do another series of The Sopranos, this time picking up from when the movie ends and lasting until the original series begins.

“I’m not that anxious to do it,” Chase said when asked how he felt about that. Chase was then asked what the chances of him doing that are, and he said that if it were to happen, he would do “one more movie” rather than a television series. “Because I have an idea for that that I’d like to do. But I don’t think they want that.”

The Many Saints of Newark was directed by Alan Taylor from a screenplay written by series creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner. It starred Michael Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti, Leslie Odom Jr. as Harold McBrayer, Jon Bernthal as Johnny Boy, Corey Stoll as Corrado, Billy Magnussen as Paulie, Michela De Rossi as Giuseppina, John Magaro as Silvio, Ray Liotta as Aldo, and Vera Farmiga as Livia.

The Sopranos prequel was produced by Chase, Konner, and Nicole Lambert, with Michael Disco, Marcus Viscidi, Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener set as executive producers.

The original series ran on-air for six seasons from 1999-2007. It starred James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falcon, Michael Imperioli, Dominic Chianese, and more. During its original run, it has been regarded as one of the greatest and most influential television drama series of all time—was honored with 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards.
