FX on Hulu’s Y: The Last Man Series Canceled After One Season

Y: The Last Man showrunner Eliza Clark took to Twitter to announce that FX on Hulu has officially decided not to renew the post-apocalyptic drama for a second season. The cancellation comes ahead of the series’ final two episodes titled “Peppers,” and “Victoria,” which are set to air on October 25 and November 1, respectively.

Despite the early cancellation, Clark remains hopeful for the future of Y: The Last Man as she expresses their team’s commitment to finding a new home for the series, revealing that there is so much stoy left to tell.

“We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu Season 2 of Y: THE LAST MAN,” Clark said in her statement. “I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell.”

She continued, “Y: THE LAST MAN is about gender, about how oppressive systems inform identity. We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production. Producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, production design, costume design, stunt coordination, and more. It is the most collaborative, creative Fulfilling, and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. We don’t want it to end. FX has been an amazing partner. We have loved working with them, and we’re sad YTLM is not going forward at FX on Hulu. But we know that someone else is going to be very lucky to have this team and this story. I have never experienced the remarkable solidarity of this many talented people. We are committed to finding Y its next home.”

For fans, who have been waiting for the adaptation, this is definitely unfortunate news given the long development process and setbacks that the project had endured before it finally went on air. The setbacks included a number of showrunner changes due to creative differences and some cast shakeups which saw the exit of Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, and Lashana Lynch, who were initially set for the respective roles of Yorick, Hero, and Agent 355.

“The series traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey,” reads the official synopsis. “It follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.”

Y: The Last Man currently stars Ben Schnetzer as Yorick, Diane Lane as Jennifer Brown, Ashley Romans as Agent 355, Diana Bang as Dr. Allison Mann, Olivia Thirlby as Hero Brown, Marin Ireland as Nora Brady, Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham, Paul Gross as the U.S. president, Juliana Canfield as Beth DeVille, and Elliot Fletcher as Sam Jordan.
