Kevin Feige Teases Multiple Versions of Loki in the Disney+ Series

With only more than two weeks left to go before the highly-anticipated debut of Loki, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and head writer Michael Waldron along with lead star Tom Hiddleston have revealed some new details about the upcoming Disney+ series. In a recent interview with EW, Feige confirmed that the studio’s third MCU series will also get to explore the multiverse as it will deal with time and reality, teasing fans that they should expect to see multiple versions of Hiddleston’s God of Mischief.

“He’s been around for thousands of years. He had all sorts of adventures,” Feige said. “Wanting to fill in the blanks and see much more of Loki’s story [was] the initial desire [for the series].”

“Part of the fun of the multiverse and playing with time is seeing other versions of characters,” he teased. “And other versions of the titular character in particular.”

His statement seemingly confirms previous circulating rumors that various iterations of Loki are set to appear in the series such as Kid Loki and Lady Loki. However, the outlet notes that he declined to comment on whether or not the events from the upcoming series would also tie into Doctor Strange 2, despite previously confirming in 2019 that both of them would indeed have a connection, just like with WandaVision.

Hiddleston also expressed how it was exciting for him to show fans more of what Loki is capable of, beyond his shapeshifting abilities, revealing that the series will explore Loki’s powers in a way they have not yet been explored. Waldron also went opened up about the Time Variance Authority’s role in Loki’s story as early episodes will question whether the fan-favorite villain will help them or take over.

“Loki is a character that’s always reckoning with his own identity, and the TVA, by virtue of what they do, is uniquely suited to hold up a mirror to Loki and make him really confront who he is and who he was supposed to be,” Waldron said.

Hiddleston added, “[That] was very exciting because in the other films, there was always something about Loki that was very controlled. He seemed to know exactly what the cards in his hand were and how he was going to play them…. And Loki versus the TVA is Loki out of control immediately, and in an environment in which he’s completely behind the pace, out of his comfort zone, destabilized, and acting out.”

Loki sees the return of Golden Globe winner Tom Hiddleston as the fan-favorite mischievous titular villain, who was last seen in Avengers: Endgame, where he successfully had stolen the Tesseract during Iron Man and Ant-Man’s failed attempt to retrieve it. Because of this, the God of Mischief has been arrested by the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space, due to the damage he had done with the timeline. Now, he must willingly work with the TVA in order to fix the reality he broke or else face deletion from existence.

The series will introduce MCU newcomers Sophia Di Martino (Yesterday, Flowers, Into the Badlands), Owen Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror: San Junipero), Cailey Fleming (The Walking Dead), and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Sasha Lane (American Honey) and Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country).

Loki hails from executive producer and head writer Michael Waldron (Rick and Morty), with Kate Herron as the director. Waldron is also the scribe for Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which Loki will reportedly have ties into just like with WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’ Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard, and Kate Herron.
