Actor, wrestler, and Wipeout host John Cena is celebrating his 44th birthday today. The former WWE Champion has a busy schedule now that he’s out of the ring, starring in the upcoming F9 and The Suicide Squad this summer. Those films are already in the can, but Cena is now working on Peacemaker, an HBO Max spinoff of his superpowered baddie from the James Gunn-led DC blockbuster.
In order to celebrate the occasion, Gunn sent out a message to John for his birthday telling him that he’d be having empanadas once again during the filming of Peacemaker. This is a reference to a previous set story where the actor had to eat an empanada in a scene during The Suicide Squad and ended up eating 31 because of repeated takes.
Cena told all during a panel at CCXP 2020 late last year. “There was a day where we shot on a rooftop where we’re all eating. I had to eat an empanada and I took it upon myself to try to eat the entire empanada in a seamless take, thinking that it’s gonna look great, but it was also a complicated shot for James. Thirty-one empanadas later, Jesus, we got it right.”
Cena said during the same appearance that one more empanada would have done him in, something that likely contributed to his response to the birthday tweet. Cena jokingly asking for a bigger costume and started a new hashtag as he recalled the humorous story:
They say timing is everything, and seeing as I may have “borrowed” a FEW #Peacemaker costumes we can now get wardrobe to make new ones in a bigger size, oh and please recommend they install an empanada poop chute #Poopmaker 💩 https://t.co/9D1aEOSUkG
