On the heels of landing her first Golden Globe nomination for her work on HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant, Kaley Cuoco has found her next small screen project in the form of a limited series centered on Oscar nominee and Golden Globe and Grammy winner Doris Day at Warner Bros. Television, according to Variety.

The series, which doesn’t currently have a writer or network, will be based on A.E. Hotchner’s 1976 biography Doris Day: Her Own Story, comprised on a series of interviews with the iconic actress, singer and animal rights activist and frequently cited as her autobiography. Day, who passed away at 97 in 2019, began her career in 1939 as a singer before eventually shifting to the world of films in the late ’40s, finding major box office success and stardom in the ’50s and ’60s with her roles in Calamity Jane, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, in which she performed what would become her signature song “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be), The Pajama Game and Pillow Talk with Rock Hudson and Tony Randall. The latter film’s success would lead to two other films featuring the trio in the lead roles.

After falling out of the spotlight due to her conservative politics and going into debt when her third husband lost all of their money prior to his death in 1968, Day turned to a career in television in the ’70s, much to her dismay, and got her out of financial hardship and later turned her attention towards animal welfare causes, much in line with Cuoco’s own interests as a competitive horse rider and owner of many dogs.
The untitled limited series is set to be executive produced by Cuoco alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden via Berlanti Productions, while Suzanne McCormack from Yes, Norman will serve as co-executive producer with Doris Day Estate trustee Bob Bashara and Jim Pierson acting as consulting producer alongside Tim Hotchner, son of the biographer.

Cuoco first worked with WBTV for 12 seasons on the hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory before shifting gears following its conclusion, forming her Yes, Normal label in 2017 and signing an exclusive overall deal with the studio and signing on to star and executive produce HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant and Harley Quinn, both of which have new seasons in the works at the WarnerMedia streamer. It was reported earlier today that the writers room for the second season of the former is already wrapping up their work and production is eyeing a September or October start to meet its expected Spring 2022 return.
