It has been almost a year since FX granted a script-to-series commitment to the reunion project of True Detective alums Nic Pizzolatto and Matthew McConaughey titled Redeemer. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the development of the thriller drama series has been permanently halted and is no longer moving forward at FX.

The network’s decision to cancel Redeemer was due to the Oscar-winning actor’s sudden exit from the project. The outlet’s sources also note that Pizzolatto is currently in negotiations to have an early exit from his overall deal with FX Productions and 20th Television.
Created by Pizzolatto and inspired by Patrick Coleman’s debut novel The Churchgoer, Redeemer was supposed to star McConaughey as a minister-turned-dissolute security guard whose search for a missing woman in Texas leads him through a corruption-steeped criminal conspiracy, as his past and present impact and entwine around a mystery of escalating violence and deceit.

The series was originally set to be executive produced by Nic Pizzolatto and Matthew McConaughey with Fox 21 TV Studios and FX Productions previously serving as producers.
The project would have been the second collaboration between Pizzolatto and McConaughey, who have previously worked together on the acclaimed first season of True Detective which earned five Emmy wins out of 12 nominations. This would have also mark McConaughey’s first major TV project after six years since starring in True Detective.
