Hulu Cancels Marvel Series Helstrom After One Season

With the departure of Jeph Loeb from the banner, which was itself folded into the larger Marvel Studios, Hulu’s Helstrom was the last standing series from Marvel Television and though initially planned as the first in Marvel TV’s Adventure into Fear franchise, the streaming platform has given it the axe after one season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Released in October 2020, the series received generally negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, who mostly praised the visual effects in the series while citing boredom in its dull story and lack of frightening atmosphere, despite its attempts at horror. The project was going to be one of the Adventure into Fear series alongside a live-action Ghost Rider starring Gabriel Luna in the titular role as the Robbie Reyes iteration, spinning off from ABC’s Agents of SHIELD while establishing itself as its own series, but due to creative differences it was scrapped and that potential franchise is now at a close as Marvel TV has been rolled in to Kevin Feige’s mothership banner, with all Marvel Cinematic Universe series now being developed exclusively for Disney+.

Helstrom followed siblings and supposed serial killer offspring Daimon Helstrom (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon). Plagued by their family background, the Helstrom’s will pursue the world’s vilest of the vile — with some family drama of their own.

Daimon is a professor of ethics who moonlights as an exorcist. Daimon has no illusions about saving a world he has no patience for; he just hopes he can help a few of the people closest to him. In his battle against a hidden world, Daimon is determined to root out demons as they arise, and will not stop until they’re vanquished.

Ana runs a successful auction house and suffers no fools, but her true interest lies in hunting down those who hurt others. Traumatized by her father as a child, Ana is driven to rid the world of those like him, even as she secretly worries her father will return.

The series stars Austen (GrantchesterThe Royals) as Daimon, Lemmon (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ana, Elizabeth Marvel (HomelandUnbelievable) as Victoria Helstrom, Ariana Guerra (Raising Dion) as Gabriella Rosetta, Robert Wisdom (Ballers) as the Caretaker, June Carryl (Mindhunter) as Dr. Louise Hastings, and Alain Uy (The Passage) as Chris Yen.

Helstrom was created for television and executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski along with Karim Zreik and Loeb. Helstrom was co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios, part of Disney Television Studios.
