Waiting to Exhale Series in the Works From Lee Daniels

Best-selling author Terry McMillan has officially announced that Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Lee Daniels is currently in the process of developing a series adaptation of Waiting to Exhale, based on McMillan’s 1992 classic novel of the same name. Daniels is expected to serve as a producer with Anthony Hemingway (American Crime Story, Treme, Power) signing on to direct.

According to Deadline, the TV adaptation has been in development at 20th Television with Attica and Tembi Locke attached to pen the script. In addition to direction, Hemingway will also be executive producing.

The novel was famously adapted into a 1995 by award-winning actor Forest Whitaker as his feature directorial debut. The Waiting to Exhale boasted a powerhouse cast led by Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine. Set in Phoenix, Arizona, the story centered around four women named Savannah, Bernadine, Robin, and Gloria as they try to navigate their complex relationships with the men in their lives as well as with one another.

Lee Daniels is best known for his critically-acclaimed works such as Monster’s Ball, The Woodsman, Shadowboxer, Precious, The Paperboy, and The Butler with the latter four he served as the director.
