Mom: Anna Faris to Exit CBS Sitcom After Seven Seasons

According to TVLine, Scary Movie alum Anna Faris will officially not be reprising her lead role as Christy Plunkett in the upcoming eighth season of CBS’s popular sitcom Mom after starring alongside Oscar winner Allison Janney for seven seasons from 2013-2020. Her surprising exit comes after a year since the series had scored its seventh and eighth season renewals with Season 7 airing its final episode last April 16, 2020.

“From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy,” WBTV, CBS, and Chuck Lorre Prods. said. “We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.”

In addition, Warner Bros. TV also confirmed that her role will not be recast but her character’s absences will be addressed in Season 8 which is expected to start its production on September 18.

“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Farris said in a statement. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

Mom centers around the dysfunctional mother-daughter duo of Christy and Bonnie Plunkett as they try their best to reconnect and fix their lives after years of struggling with addiction that resulted in them being estranged for so many years. Since its debut, it has received positive reviews and high ratings, particularly praising the show for addressing issues such as alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic violence, and more.
