Ayo Edebiri replacing Jenny Slate as Missy for Netflix’s Big Mouth
The past few months have seen the creative talent behind Apple’s Central Park and Netflix’s Big Mouth make the decision to recast their biracial characters with appropriate-raced stars and now the latter has found its new voice for Missy Foreman-Greenwald with Ayo Edebiri (Dickinson, Sunnyside), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Amidst protests surrounding the death of George Floyd in June, Kristen Bell and Jenny Slate came to the mutual decision with the creators of their respective series to depart from their roles in an effort to ensure proper racial representation was on display with both the characters and cast behind them. Bell’s Central Park character, Molly Tillerman, found a new voice in The Umbrella Academy‘s Emmy Raver-Lampman this past July, with the creative team working with Bell to find a new character for her to portray.
Though Edebiri is taking over the role of Missy from Slate, the majority of the fourth season will still feature the latter’s voice as she had mostly wrapped production on her episodes while the final two episodes of the season will introduce Edebiri’s to the part, with her dialogue already having been recorded
Focusing on pleasantries of growing up, Big Mouth is a half-hour edgy adult animated comedy from real-life best friends Nick Kroll (Sausage Party) and Andrew Goldberg about the glorious nightmare that is teenage puberty. Comedian John Mulaney (Saturday Night Live) lends his voice to the character of Andrew, while Kroll (who serves as co-creator, executive producer) voices several characters, including Nick.
Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg and screenwriter-directors Mark Levin & Jennifer Flackett are all creators and executive producers on the series. The series is a Netflix production and has proven to be a large success since its debut in 2017, maintaining a rare 100% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes for both its first and second seasons.
The first three seasons of Big Mouth are currently available to stream on Netflix while the fourth season is expected to debut this fall.
