The currently-untitled series is baed on Michael Lista’s Toronto Life article “The Sting,” which centers on a frustrated Canadian detective who takes on a cold case in hopes of rising in the ranks as a hero and winning a confession from a suspect, only to see it spiral out of control as an undercover cop attempting an elaborate sting, playacting cops, taxpayer resources and a friendship with a target all create new hurdles for him.

The project is being written and executive produced by Adam Perlman (Billions) while the Downeys and Amanda Burrell are attached to executive produce the series via Team Downey and Lista attached to co-executive produce. Though no cast have currently been set, sources report that Downey Jr. is currently considering a supporting role in the project.

Team Downey made their TV debut this year with the long-in-development Perry Mason reboot at HBO, which was originally set to star Downey Jr. who was replaced by Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and landing as one of the strongest debuts for the cabler in the past two years. Originally planned as a miniseries, HBO recently reversed course and announced it would return for a second season.
