Space Force Season 2: Creator Greg Daniels Talks Potential Renewal

Space Force creator Greg Daniels weighs in on potential Season 2 renewal

Following the series debut of Netflix‘s newest sitcom Space Force last Friday, co-creator Greg Daniels has addressed the possibility of getting another season for the Steve Carell-led series. Speaking with Collider, Daniels has revealed that although the streaming service hasn’t officially ordered a second season yet, preliminary work has already started for the potential new season. Despite having a low approval rating from most critics, Carell’s first major comeback to comedy has still secured the number one spot on Netflix’s latest Top 10 list.

“We’re certainly hoping for a few more seasons,” Daniels said. “And we have started to assemble the senior writers to discuss what would happen next year. We don’t have the pickup yet, but yeah. There’s a lot to follow up on based on where we ended.”

The streaming service gave Space Force a straight-to-series order, which is described as a workplace comedy focusing on a group of people who must develop a sixth branch of the military, inspired by President Trump’s desire to develop a “Space Force” military branch.

The series is led by Golden Globe winner Steve Carell (The Office) as General Mark R. Naird and John Malkovich (Bird Box) as Dr. Adrian Mallory. It will also star Lisa Kudrow (Friends), Diana Silvers (Booksmart, Ma) as Erin Naird, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as F. Tony Scarapiducci, Jimmy O. Yang (Crazy Rich Asians) as Dr. Chan Kaifang, Tawny Newsome as Angela Ali and Alex Sparrow as Bobby Telatovich.

Space Force marks the reunion between Carell and The Office creator Greg Daniels. Carell and Daniels co-created the series together and are executive producing alongside 3 Arts’ Howard Klein, whom the two previously worked with on the acclaimed NBC comedy that ran for eight years. The series also served as Carell’s first major comeback to comedy after 7 years since departing The Office in 2013.

Netflix has been streaming The Office for years and ratings are reportedly higher than many of its original series on the service and picked the show up upon hearing of the project before it could be shopped to any other networks.
