BritBox Celebrates National Nurses Day With Slate of Programs Showcasing Healthcare

On May 6, National Nurses Day, BritBox will pay tribute to frontline healthcare workers through a selection of medical-themed programming that celebrates healthcare heroes.

At the center of this celebratory collection will be the BritBox debut of Florence Nightingale, a captivating biopic drama (never-before-streamed in the United States) that is directed by Emmy Award winner Norman Stone (Shadowland) and starring Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) as the mother of modern nursing in honor of what would have been her bicentenary. Based largely on her own words that sparked global health care reform, the film follows this British medical icon’s journey as she paves the way for this noble profession during a time of crisis and ultimately becomes an international hero.

Other key titles in the “Heroes of Healthcare” collection include:

Frankie (BritBox Premiere)

A heroine for the modern age, Eve Myles (Broadchurch, A Very English Scandal) stars as district nurse Frankie Maddox who looks life and death in the eye on a daily basis; her mission is to make a difference. She’s electric and quirky, absolutely wonderful at her job and adapts to every situation life and work can throw at her as she tries to live in the fast lane and juggle her work at the same time. This heartwarming and funny series follows Frankie and her eclectic team as they visit their patients at home and takes a look at the extraordinary power of ordinary lives.

Super Nurses (North American Premiere)

An inspirational and life-affirming series following a selection of cancer nurses as they go about their daily work. Dedicated and compassionate, they do a job most couldn’t face, in a wide variety of settings from pediatrics to palliative care. These Macmillan, Marie Curie and NHS nurses support patients and their families through their intensely personal and emotional journeys, dealing with life and death situations all the time, yet there are many moments of joy and laughter. Through gripping narratives, we discover how these special people manage to keep on caring.

Horrible Histories: Formidable Florence Nightingale (North American Premiere)

Over-the-top and hugely entertaining, the Horrible Histories gang presents a hilarious take on the legendary life of the mother of modern nursing. We follow Florence as she embarks on her journey to help the soldiers in the Crimean War, and in doing so changes the world of nursing forever. Not to mention her obsession with unusually named cats.

The Royal

The Royal is set in the 1960s and focuses on the fictional “St Aidan’s Royal Free Hospital”, an NHS hospital serving the fictional rural seaside town of Elsinby and its surrounding area. The majority of the plots in each episode are centered around medical emergencies or serious medical cases and the moral dilemmas created or exposed by these matters. Additional story-lines also include staff members dealing with personal problems or issues, and occasional subplots.

The Royal Today

Created by the award-winning team behind the hugely successful nostalgic medical series The Royal, this engaging spin-off is set firmly in the present day but located in the same beautiful coastal town as its predecessor.

In this late Victorian era series, Eleanor Bramwell (Jemma Redgrave) sets out to prove her worth as a female doctor in a male-dominated profession. Her father is eager for Eleanor to join him in his respectable private practice, but Eleanor decides to begin work in London’s East End.
