Dawn: Victoria Mahoney & Ava DuVernay Developing Amazon Sci-Fi Series

Variety brings word that Victoria Mahoney, who served as a second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, becoming the first woman to direct part of a Star Wars film, is developing a new sci-fi series at Amazon titled Dawn alongside Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Ava DuVernay (13th, Selma, When They See Us) and her ARRAY banner.

Dawn is an adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 science-fiction novel of the same name. The story centers on an African-American woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war. Dawn is the first in Butler’s three-part novel series, collectively titled Lilith’s Brood. The second and third parts, called Adulthood Rites and Imago, were published in 1988 and 1989. Overall, the trilogy explores themes of sexuality, gender, and race.

Macro Television Studios is also developing the project after previously optioning the rights to the award-winning book.

DuVernay, Mahoney, Charles D. King, Allen Bain, Gary Pearl, and Thomas L. Carter will executive produce. Macro Television president Marta Fernandez will oversee for the studio.

Mahoney is also directing the pilot episode of Jordan Peele’s upcoming series Lovecraft Country for HBO and is also writing the series. She previously collaborated with DuVernay on the OWN series Queen Sugar.

DuVernay is currently shooting a pilot for HBO Max titled DMZ, adapted from the DC Comics series and will direct the feature film adaption of DC’s New Gods.
