Amy Heckerling Directing Royalties For Short-Form Streamer Quibi

Amy Heckerling is getting back in the director’s chair. The filmmaker behind Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Clueless has just agreed to direct all 10 episodes of the musical comedy Royalties, per a report from Deadline. The series is slated to begin shooting this week and will premiere on the upcoming streaming service Quibi.

Royalties is being described as is a satirical take on the often untold story of songwriters behind the world’s biggest hits. The show follows the ascent of a ragtag songwriting duo – Sara and Pierce  – as they navigate the strange and hilarious challenges of creating a truly great song, week after week. Each episode will feature real-life music personalities portraying fictitious pop stars.

The project is the first musical series that Quibi is currently developing. It will be produced by Fox’s SideCar, headed by Gail Berman. Hend Baghdady, Joe Earley, Ricky Rollins, and Berman are also set to executive produce.

Quibi, which is short for “Quick Bites” is scheduled to have its launch on April 6, 2020, with already more than a billion dollars raised from its investors. It has a number of projects currently in development. Guillermo del Toro, Sam Raimi, Catherine Hardwick, Steven Spielberg, Paul Feig, Anna Kendrick, Laurence Fishburne, and Don Cheadle are eight of the many producers and talents who are working hard on the production of the said projects

The streaming service, founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, is set to feature series that run two to four hours in length and are broken down into parts that are no longer than 10 minutes in length.
