“When you know that’s what you’re doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death,” Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb said to Deadline of the conclusion of ABC’s Clark Gregg-led superspy series, which is currently in the last weeks of its sixth season. “Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you’re not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You’re playing that this is going to be the end of the story.”

Loeb is set to appear at Comic-Con this afternoon joining Gregg and fellow cast members Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward alongside executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon.

While the show got a renewed interest from ABC, earning a season six order after the emotional season five finale that was envisioned as the end of the series and an early season seven order, Loeb says the decision to end the series came from the choice to end it on their terms.

“How many shows do you know that just suddenly ended, and you feel like, but wait a minute, there was more,” Loeb said. “Yes, in the chronology of this is we thought Season 5 was the end. If you go back and you look at the end of that season, it is written that way. Actually, the last episode of that season is called ‘The End.'”

The season five finale saw the team put a stop to Glenn Talbot, aka Graviton, but also saw longtime team leader Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) leave with Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) to return to Tahiti to live out his final days after his brief time as a Ghost Rider burned through the Kree DNA coursing through his body that healed his fatal injury from The Avengers. With Coulson finally going off to be officially dead, the agency is in need of a new director, with Mack taking over the reigns.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez, John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe, Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell, and Nick Blood as Lance Hunter.
