George R.R. Martin Says Game of Thrones Spin-Offs are Moving Along

Author George R.R. Martin has given an update on two of the Game of Thrones spin-offs currently in development at HBO — although he really doesn’t like the term spin-offs.

In a post on his popular LiveJournal page titled “Stuff and Nonsense,” Martin wrote that “internet reports are notoriously unreliable. We have had five different Game of Thrones successor shows in development (I mislike the term “spinoffs”) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely.

He also mentioned that his history on the Targaryens, Fire & Blood, is back on the NYT top-10 best-seller list after a brief relapse at number 12, which he teases could be relevant to the plot of one of the spin-offs successor shows.

The one I am not supposed to call The Long Night will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of Fire & Blood and come up with your own theories,” Martin added.

The series he’s not supposed to call The Long Night was already greenlit by HBO, and is set 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse have been cast in the prequel series. S.J. Clarkson (The DefendersJessica Jones) will direct the pilot.
