In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Game of Thrones executive producer and writer Bryan Cogman has revealed that the his spin-off for the award-winning fantasy series is no longer in development and will not be moving forward at HBO.
“My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way.” Cogman said. “So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros. It’s wonderfully bittersweet. I’ll certainly miss it, but I’m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain’s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I’ve learned.”

Cogman co-wrote many notable episodes of Game of Thrones including Season 3’s “Kissed by Fire, Season 6’s “The Broken Man,” and Season 7’s “Stormborn.” His last episode for the series was the final season’s episode two titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” which aired last Sunday night.
“I’m eager to start the next chapter, but a part of my heart will always live with Game of Thrones. That’s one of the reasons why this episode was so important to me. It was a goodbye and a love letter to these characters and to this cast.”
It was previously reported that Cogman along with Jane Goldman, Max Borenstein, Brian Helgeland, and Cary Wray had been tapped to each develop five Game of Thrones spin-offs. Goldman’s prequel series is the only one confirmed to be moving forward, with pilot commitment from the network already in place. The other projects are reportedly still in development and being kept under wraps.
Based on the popular book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, the Emmy-winning fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent kingdom. The series stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.
Executive producers of Game of Thrones Season 8 are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger, and Bernadette Caulfield; co-executive producers are Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis, George R.R. Martin and Bryan Cogman; and producers are Chris Newman, Greg Spence, and Lisa McAtackney.

The final season of Game of Thrones likely won’t be our last trip to Westeros, as HBO has greenlit a pilot set 1,000 years before the events of the wildly popular sword and sorcery epic. Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse have been cast in the prequel series. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) will direct the pilot.
