The series, created by Ed Decter (In Plain Sight) and based upon the YA fantasy novel series The Mortal Instruments, debuted on ABC Family (now Freeform) in 2016 to mixed reviews from critics, but highly positive reviews from audiences, earning it a second season renewal two months after its premiere, followed by a third season renewal three months after its second season premiere. However, due to a large drop in ratings and the streaming deal between producer Constantin Films and Netflix coming to an end, Freeform chose to cancel the series after the third season, while adding an additional two episodes to give it a proper conclusion.

The third season entered its midseason break last May, with the previous episode seeing the death of Clary in the explosion of Lilith’s apartment and the arrival of Jonathan Morgenstern (Luke Baines, Under the Silver Lake), Clary’s evil brother who will prove to be a formidable foe for the Shadowhunters going into the latter part of the final season. Magnus is also suffering from the loss of his magic and must rely on the help of other people while it’s revealed in the premiere that unbeknownst to everyone, Clary is actually still alive and in a dangerous new situation.

The final season of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments will return to Freeform on Monday, February 25 at 8 p.m.
