The First Season 1 Episode 8 Recap
In the previous episode of Hulu’s The First, Hagerty and Denise had a falling out about his decision to go to Mars despite the risk of not coming back. In The First Season 1 Episode 8, the crew of Providence 2 finally began their mission to Mars ten years after the failed first mission.
On launch day, the crew prepared to leave. They packed small bags of personal items, signed photos, ate cake, and played basketball. Laz visited them and gave a short speech. Kayla cajoled her into shooting a free throw, which she made. After a group photo, the crew got dressed for the mission.
The launch could not have gone smoother. Matteo spoke with them from the ground as part of Mission Control. The rocket docked with the already orbiting space vehicle that would take them to Mars. The crew booted up the ship’s system and made adjustments and repairs.
Denise was not planning to go to the launch with Laz and her kids, but at the last, she changed her mind. After the rocket launched, she had to go off to a stairwell by herself. Laz found her and let her listen in on the Comm. With the success of the launch, both Laz and Denise cried in relief.
With Hagerty gone, Denise went back to the tattoo shop to pack up her studio. She locked it back up as if she was never there. She packed a box from her bedroom. Before leaving, she filmed herself writing “I hate you” on the chalkboard. Hagerty was watching. She continued to write, “I hate you because I love you.” Finally, she erased “hate” and replaced it with “miss”, and Hagerty exhaled in relief.
Throughout the season, we have gotten glimpses of a man rebuilding an old, yellow pay phone. He spoke in a Louisiana accent about the stars. His name is Lawrence, but the audience doesn’t know who he is or where in the timeline he fits. The last we see of him is him walking out while his entire workshop shakes.
