Star Wars Explained: Who Is the Wookiee Jedi in The Bad Batch?

The Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 6 featured the appearance of a Wookiee Jedi called Gungi. The character’s return had already been teased in the sophomore season’s trailer, but the latest installment officially marked his comeback. The story revealed his name and showed his home planet but didn’t go into details about his backstory. Here’s some information on Gungi.

Who Is Gungi?

In “Tribe,” the Clone Force 99 met Gungi, one of the few Jedi who escaped Order 66, a.k.a. the Great Jedi Purge. Gungi made his first appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5 as one of the brightest students in his class. Under the guidance of Yoda and Ahsoka Tano, Gungi and other younglings collected their lightsaber crystal. As a student, he encountered and survived a series of dangers, including being captured by the pirates and fighting against General Grievous. Gungi used to study with Tera Sinube, who recently appeared as the Jedi trapped in the Jedi Tomb in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

The story didn’t reveal how Gungi survived the Great Jedi Purge, but he managed to stay alive even if the Empire was hunting down all the Jedi. The result speaks for itself, considering that Darth Vader and the members of the Inquisitorius were on the trail of all the Force-sensitive survivors. Somehow, Gungi also managed to attain the rank of Padawan. Again, the story didn’t go into details about Gungi’s fate, but everything seemed to point out his master didn’t share the same luck with his apprentice.

What Happened in The Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 6

The Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 6 saw Omega and the others helping Gungi escape from the Vanguard Axis clan before bringing the Wookiee to his home planet, Kashyyyk. The place was full of Imperials and Trandoshan slavers, forcing Gungi and the others to put on a fight to protect themselves. Star Wars fans already know what kind of fate expect the Wookiees captured by the Trandoshans, think about what happened to Black Krrsantan. The episode also explored a bit Gungi’s identity, as he left his planet when he was very young and had almost no memory of it. Still, when Kashyyyk was in danger, somehow the Wookiee Jedi felt the call to return home.

The story showed the deep connection between the Wookiees and their planet. When it appeared the Imperials and Trandoshans outnumbered the locals, the Wookiees asked for help from the planet’s trees. In what looked like an Avatar reference, the trees and part of the local animals took part in the fight and defeated the invaders, almost as if Kashyyyk itself wanted to protect its inhabitants. The episode concluded with Hunter stressing children should not take part in wars, expressing once more the senselessness of war and violence.
