The 13 Weirdest Monsters From Scooby-Doo

Ever since Saturday mornings in 1969, a group of four teenagers and their talking Great Dane have been solving mysteries. More often than not, those mysteries included a masked man/woman who “would’ve gotten away with it too. If it weren’t for those meddling kids.” The aforementioned masks (or sometimes actual supernatural monsters) have come in many forms. With so many different derivations of Scooby-Doo (across television and film), the writers and animators have had to get creative with their monsters. So much so that conspiracy theorists have suggested the entire show is one long acid trip…

In honor of the Scooby-Doo revival Scoob! out today on Digital HD, Comingsoon.net is taking a look at some of the weirdest monsters ever encountered by Mystery Incorporated. For better or worse, check out our picks below! Click here to purchase Scoob! on Digital HD!

13. The Tar Monster

First appearing in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode, “The Tar Monster,” the titular villain is exactly what you’d expect: a monster made of simulated tar. However, like most of the monsters in the Scooby-Doo universe, the Tar Monster was really just a man—Mr. Stoner scaring people in a wet suit.

12. The Caveman

In the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode, “Scooby’s Night with a Frozen Fright,” the gang comes across a frozen Neanderthal. By nor fault of their own, the prehistoric man is thawed/freed, becoming…the episode’s monster? Turns out, he’s just a professor with a club dressed up as a Neanderthal in a desperate attempt to steal a competitor’s revolutionary new marine life communicator (which is worth millions).

11. Phantom Virus

The Phantom Virus appeared in the film, Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase. He is an anthropomorphic computer virus that is obsessed with baseball…which is the clue that eventually leads the gang to his creator, Bill McLemore

10. Demondo

Demondo appeared in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo episode, “Scooby in Kwackyland.” Demondo is a furry, green demon who makes slurping noises when he speaks and has the power to transport people into comic strips (which are then brought to life).

9. The Phantom Disc Jockey

The Phantom Disc Jockey appeared in the Scooby’s All-Stars segment, “The Diabolical Disc Demon.” Let’s be honest, this one is just a rip-off of the rock band KISS (and also just a man in a costume).

8. The Phony Phantom

The Phony Phantom appeared in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode, “Haunted House Hang-Up.” As you can see, the “phantom” is just the farmer, Asa Shanks wearing a sheet (and occasionally wielding an axe). You won’t think this disguise would fool anyone; however, Fred and Shaggy somehow are still terrified by him. Although, this could just be a reaction to the fact that a crazy man has an axe.

7. The Demon/Ghost Animals of Africa

In the What’s New Scooby-Doo? episode, “Safari, So Goodi!” the gang goes on a safari where the run into a bunch of ghost-like creatures. Turns out the animals are just covered in make-up and hypnotized by poachers.

6. The Pterodactyl Ghost

Human being have a tendency to dress up like dinosaurs in Scooby-Doo. The first time this happens is in the Scooby’s All Star Laff-a-Lympics segment, “Hang in There, Scooby-Doo” where a man dresses up like a Ptreodactyl to sabotage a hang gliding contest.

5. The Titanic Twist

The supposed ghost of a wrestler whose move, “The Titanic Twist” was banned from the sport, first appeared in the What’s New, Scooby Doo? episode, “Wrestle Maniacs.” The wrestling ghost is deformed and superhuman, however the gang discovers that he uses knockout gas to defeat his opponents, eventually revealing the wrestler to be the disguise of two small children looking to scare their wrestling father away from the sport. Also, it’s worth noting that this monster eerily resembles the Pokemon Machamp…

4. Chickenstein

Chickenstein is 7-foot-tall humanoid chicken (who also clucks like a chicken and sneaks the word “egg” into conversation) that first appeared in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo episode, “Chickenstein Lives.” He is revealed to be a disguised Casmer Codwaller, who attempts to hide an operation in which he sold stolen merchandise.

3. Giant Bees

A gang of foreign spies dress up like giant bees in The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries episode, “Mission: Un-Doo-Able.” Yes, they do steal honey and yes, they do fly using jet-packs.

2. Gluten Demon

The Gluten Demon first appeared Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated episode, “The Devouring.” The Gluten Demon (appropriately) consumes infinite amounts of delicious and unhealthful food like baked breads, pizza, and is fearful of all that is gluten-free. The Gluten Demon turns out to be the star of a cooking show, dressing up to sabotage competing restaurants.

1. Burger Monster

Instead of looking for another job, a disgruntled employee of a local burger joint dresses up as a burger monster to drive his employer out of business in the A Pup Named Scooby-Doo episode, “Night of the Living Burger.”
