The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 5 Recap
“For This Child, I Prayed”
Commander Waterford invited Serena into a leadership meeting about Luke and Nichole. Afterwards, they asked June to call Luke to set up a visit. At first, she refused, but privately, Serena assured her that it was only to say goodbye and that Luke would be protected. June’s condition was that Serena would owe her. She only had two minutes to call him and chose her words carefully. Eventually, Luke agreed to a meeting with only Serena.
At the Toronto airport, Mark Tuello met her and gave her a change of clothes. He wanted her to blend in for a public meeting in an airport lounge. Luke told Serena that she would never be anything to Nichole. Serena insisted that she protected June. After initially refusing, Luke accepted the necklace that Serena gave Nichole and let her hold the baby.
While she changed back into her teal clothing, Serena was heartbroken. On the plane, she found a cell phone that Tuello had snuck into her bag. Commander Waterford greeted Serena and told her that it didn’t have to be over.
Mrs. Lawrence told June that Joseph used to show his love for her by making mixtapes. She kept them in the basement but never listened to them. Mrs. Lawrence felt that he was no longer the same man. June insisted that there were signs that a part of him was still good, since he helped her and Emily. She went to the basement and found the tapes.
June sent Serena a package to give to Luke. She almost forgot to give it to him, but we saw Luke with it. The tape had been one of Lawrence’s mixtapes. June had taped over it. She told Luke the truth about Nichole. Her name was really Holly, her father was Nick, and she was born out of love. June explained that she did what she had to for survival and told him that he should find love too.
Plea to the World
The Handmaids congratulated June after news spread about the video of Nichole and Luke. Ofmatthew commented to June that Nichole should be with her parents, implying the Waterfords. At the end of the next trip to the grocery, Ofmatthew confessed to June that she was pregnant. She wasn’t happy about it.
We saw June in the back of a Guardian vehicle. She met Aunt Lydia who had her change into a nicer version of her clothes. The Waterfords had her standing behind them as they broadcasted to the world that their daughter had been kidnapped by a criminal.
