Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6 Recap

The end of HBO’s Game of Thrones is here with one final episode and an ending that will have us talking and debating until George R.R. Martin ends the story himself. In the previous episode of Game of Thrones, Daenerys set fire to King’s Landing after Cersei’s surrender. Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6 showed us the aftermath and how Westeros picked up the pieces.

Queen of the Ashes

Jon and Tyrion walked the burnt streets of King’s Landing. Tyrion wanted to go to the Red Keep alone and found Cersei’s and Jaime’s bodies among the rubble. Jon and Davos came upon Grey Worm about to sentence Lannister soldiers to death. After a confrontation, Jon told him he was going to see Daenerys about her orders to kill all of Cersei’s followers. At the Red Keep, Daenerys gave a rousing speech to the Dothraki and Unsullied about conquering the world and freeing everyone as she freed the people of King’s Landing.

Tyrion threw his Hand of the Queen pin aside, and Daenerys had him taken away. Jon went to see Tyrion, who tried one last time to convince him that Daenerys was unfit to rule. He pointed out that, while they didn’t know what she said, her speech sounded like the war was not over like Jon had hoped.

Daenerys went to the throne room and touched the Iron Throne. Jon confronted her about the innocent people she’d killed. Daenerys wanted Jon to be with her, and in their embrace, he stabbed and killed her. Drogon arrived and, after seeing his dead mother, melted the Iron Throne. He took her body and flew away.

Bran the Broken

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6 Recap

After some time has passed, Grey Worm brought Tyrion to the remaining Lords and Ladies of Westeros. Daenerys’s people wanted justice for her death and Tyrion’s betrayal. When Tyrion suggested that the new King or Queen should decide, they revealed that there wasn’t one. After some suggestions, Tyrion offered Bran’s name. Bran revealed that was why he was there, and he was unanimously chosen as King. All future rulers would be chosen and not born into their positions.

Bran chose Tyrion as his Hand, and since he didn’t want it, it was considered his punishment. Sansa declared that the North would be an independent nation, and Bran agreed. Jon was to join the Night’s Watch again as his punishment.

We saw the first small council meeting with Tyrion as Hand of the King, Bronn as Master of Coin, Davos as Master of Ships, Brienne as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and Sam as Grand Maester. Sam brought Tyrion the recorded history of all that had transpired, “A Song of Ice and Fire”. Bran briefly inquired about Drogon’s whereabouts and Ser Podrick took him away to look for him. We also saw Brienne add to Jaime’s entry in The White Book.

Queen of the North

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6 Recap

Jon said goodbye to Arya and Sansa before shipping off to the Wall. Tormund and Ghost greeted him, and Jon gave Ghost a nice pat. They and the rest of the wildlings went north of the Wall as we saw a few blades of grass peek out from the snow, signaling the oncoming spring.

Arya set sail on her ship bearing the Stark sigil and a direwolf bow. She wanted to explore what was west of Westeros, beyond where the maps end. In Winterfell, Sansa was crowned Queen of the North.
