Russian Doll Episode 2 Recap
In the previous episode of Netflix’s Russian Doll, Nadia celebrated her 36th birthday and died… again and again. While she ended the episode unscathed and heading home, Russian Doll season 1 episode 2 had Nadia struggling with her new reality.
Nadia woke up in her bed Monday morning. She burned her finger in the kitchen and headed to her code review meeting. Nadia stopped at the bodega and asked Ferran about his friend, but he didn’t know what she was talking about. She noticed the faces walking past her as she left a message for Maxine’s drug dealer, Wardog, and texted John. During the meeting, the project heads blamed her for a bug, and Nadia fixed Bob’s mistake.
She left the meeting early to see Wardog at his bar, and he told her the password to a secret room. He explained that he rolled the joints himself and laced them with cocaine from his new supplier. Nadia left when John called her. John’s concern for her quickly devolved into an argument, but Nadia fell down open cellar doors and died.
When Nadia came to in the bathroom again, she stormed out of the party and headed to Wardog’s bar. She used the password to get down to the secret room. Nadia confronted Wardog about the joint. He was next to his new supplier, Dr. Daniel, who admitted it was ketamine, not cocaine. It was supposed to be a treatment for depression in cancer patients. Nadia ranted to Wardog and Dr. Daniel about her burn disappearing from her finger. Outside, she saw Ferran leaving the bar with his sick friend. When she walked away, she fell down the same cellar doors and died.
Nadia stormed out of the bathroom and confronted Maxine. As she left the party, she bumped into someone and fell down the stairs to her death. This repeated four times, with her getting increasingly hysterical at Max. Nadia slammed the chicken into the kitchen floor, and Max told her she couldn’t leave the party. Nadia drank and did drugs by herself all night until she fell asleep on the couch.
The next morning, she woke up to find Lizzy entwined with three people. Nadia had Lizzy take her down the fire escape. She headed to Ruth’s and grabbed some chicken from the kitchen. Ruth came in from a session with a patient. Nadia explained her situation, and Ruth reminded her of the word Nadia chose as a teenager to let Ruth know when things were really bad. Nadia said, “Record Player,” and Ruth offered to call her friend from Bellevue.
Ruth promised to follow the ambulance in a cab, but alone with the men in the ambulance, Nadia changed her mind about going. They wrestled her, and a car crashed into the ambulance. Transported back to the party, Nadia walked by a bouquet of flowers in a vase that was quickly wilting.
