In the previous episode of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Midge made Benjamin spend time with her to get Rose off her back in the Catskills. In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2 episode 5, the Joel’s parents finally arrive to join them, but an opportunity for Midge means she must head back to the city.
The Good Booth
Midge received a call at the salon from Mrs. O’Toole. She needed someone to work the Revlon counter, and if Midge could get there by 3pm, she’d be back in “the show.” Ida offered to have her go back to the city with Benjamin, since he was due to go back. On the road, Midge riffed on the news, which Benjamin seemed to find funny. He invited her to a Broadway play for which a patient had given him tickets.
The play was a bust, so they left before the second act. Midge took him to see Lenny Bruce, whom he enjoyed. While he checked in with the hospital, Midge caught up with Lenny. He asked if her date knew she was a comic. She took Benjamin to the deli she frequents. After he asked her to dinner, Midge blurted out that she was a comedian and that no one except half the room knows. Amused and impressed, he called her “weird”.
Conducting Business
Joel was getting attention from the girls at Steiner Resort. Moishe saw Midge getting into Benjamin’s car. He encouraged Joel’s flirting, while Joel brushed them off as just wanting him to teach them how to bowl. At Polynesian Night, Shirley, who had clearly talked to Moishe, urged him to move on since it didn’t seem like Midge was waiting around for him.
Criss-Cross
Susie met Chester, a man who also pretended to work there. He insisted they were like-minded people, but Susie kept trying to brush him off as she tried to book Midge for gigs. She finally landed one in the Catskills, but unfortunately, she couldn’t find Midge anywhere.
Finally, Susie called her parents’ house in New York, and Midge answered. She berated Midge for not telling her that she had left. Midge had to get back to the Catskills because she had a gig at the Concord Hotel. Midge got a ride from her brother Noah and his wife Astrid.
When she got there, the booker was concerned because she didn’t look funny. However, Midge had the large audience laughing during the whole set, even when she realized Abe was in the audience watching her. Abe had snuck away to avoid the Maisels during Polynesian Night. Despite the panicked air to her set, the booker loved her.
