On November 30, 2017, the authorities discovered Hickey’s body inside his apartment in southeast Baltimore’s Upper Fells Point, per FOX Baltimore. Officers revealed that he found the firefighter’s body after conducting a wellness check. As per the police, Hickey’s body was discovered with a single gunshot wound to his head. After authorities initiated an investigation, they soon arrested a man named Daniel Greene for the murder of Jon Hickey.
As a result, the police charged Greene with first-degree murder of Hickey. On the other hand, the outlet mentioned that the motive was “domestic in nature.” The authorities got their hands on the surveillance video that saw someone breaking into Hickey’s home. Subsequently, the court documents show that Greene’s former girlfriend identified the man in the video and told the police that it was Daniel Greene. Reports suggest that Greene’s former girlfriend was dating Jon Hickey at the time of the crime.
Jon Hickey: Why was sentencing postponed?
As mentioned above, Daniel Greene went to trial for the murder of Jon Hickey. Subsequently, a woman testified during the initial phase of the trial, per FOX Baltimore. During the trial, the witness testified that she requested a wellness check, after which the authorities found his body. The publication also mentioned that the investigators seized Greene’s laptop and found that he had searched for Hickey’s address.
The trial began in June 2023, and in a couple of weeks, the jury found him guilty of murdering Jon Hickey. However, Greene’s motion filed in September 2023 led to the postponement of the sentencing, per CBS News. The outlet reported that Greene asked for a new “legal counsel” and postponement. As a result, the judge sided with Greene and postponed the sentencing.
Finally, in February 2024, the court sentenced Daniel Greene to life in prison on the charge of first-degree murder. Additionally, he received 20 years for home invasion and firearm charges, per Baltimore Sun.
