Dr Death: What Did Christopher Duntsch Do?

In 2015, the arrest of Dr. Christopher Duntsch stunned the entire community. According to the authorities, the Texas-based surgeon injured and even killed nearly 40 patients he operated between 2011 and 2013. As a result, the media started calling him “Dr. Death.” The case got much media attention and became one of the most talked about cases in the US.

According to Time Magazine, Duntsch presented himself as a hardworking medical professional. However, things started to go downhill between 2006 and 2008. The outlet mentioned that one woman saw Duntsch taking LSD and cocaine one night before heading to his hospital shift the next morning. It didn’t take long for people and his peers to know about his botched procedures at his workplace.

In 2015, after his arrest, CBS News revealed that Christopher Duntsch was in poor condition during operations. The outlet also suggested that “his actions caused the deaths of two patients.” Additionally, he left two patients with “disabling injuries.”

Where is Dr. Death now?

As mentioned above, Christopher Duntsch, aka Dr. Death, injured many of his patients over the years. According to CBS News, between 2011 and 2013, the doctor worked at three hospitals in Dallas. During this time period, he operated on 37 people and killed two. Moreover, his procedures went on to injure 31 others. Before getting arrested, his colleagues raised concerns about his abilities. However, he was never reported to the concerned authority, but he was allowed to resign from the medical facilities.

Nevertheless, the complaints reached the Texas Medical Board in 2012, which revoked his privileges in June 2013. As per CBS News, the authorities arrested Duntsch in 2015 and stood trial in 2017. The jury found him guilty of hurting an elderly person named Mary Erfund. The jury also noted that the botched surgery was “reckless and malicious actions.” As a result, the court sentenced him to life in prison. Christopher Duntsch, also known as Dr. Death, is now being held in the Texas Department of Corrections, per CBS News.

A series based on Duntsch’s malpractices, titled Dr. Death, premiered exclusively on Peacock in 2021. Season 2 of the series was released in December 2023.
