What Was Jeffrey Dahmer’s Sentence?

The infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer started his killing spree in 1978. As per reports, he was just 18 years of age when he committed his first murder. For over 13 years, Dahmer continued to terrorize the nation by murdering several young men. One of the main reasons why Dahmer became such a terrifying serial killer is how he used to preserve the body parts of his victims. It has been widely reported that he used to engage in cannibalism.

However, in July 1991, the authorities finally arrested Jeffrey Dahmer and interrogated him. According to Time Magazine, Dahmer initially admitted to killing 11 people. However, he soon confessed that he killed 17 people between 1978 and 1991. He mostly targeted gay men and boys of color. After his confession, he even drew a map for the police so that they could search his house. In February 1992, Dahmer was charged and convicted for 15 murders that he committed. Sometime later, he received his 16th life sentence for another murder, as per USA Today.

During the trial, the prosecuting team continued telling the court that Dahmer was a “calculating criminal” who dismembered his victims “to get rid of the evidence,” the Washington Post reported. As a result, the jury found Jeffrey Dahmer guilty of multiple charges and sentenced him to 16 life terms in prison. However, he died in 1994 after fellow inmate Christopher Scarver beat him to death. He was 34.

Did any of Dahmer’s victims survive?

As mentioned above, the police weren’t able to catch Jeffrey Dahmer for a long period of time. However, a guy named Tracy Edwards helped the authorities in nabbing the serial killer. According to Newsweek, Dahmer met Edwards in a bar and asked him if he would like to come to his apartment for some drinks. Edwards said yes and went to Dahmer’s apartment.

However, things got weirder when Dahmer handcuffed him. After watching a movie, Dahmer threatened to kill him and eat his heart. But Edwards managed to escape the serial killer by punching him, as per Newsweek.

He recounted the events in front of the jury and told the court what happened that night. Even though Jeffrey Dahmer received 16 life sentences for the murders he committed, Edwards’ life changed forever. There are several reports that Tracy Edwards became homeless and was taken into custody multiple times. He spent one and a half years in prison for pleading guilty in 2011 to throwing a man to his death off a bridge in Milwaukee.
