Carol Kirkwood announces she’s leaving BBC
Carol Kirkwood, one of the most famous weather presenters in the United Kingdom, is departing the channel in April this year after being on for nearly 30 years. Since 2010, she has also been the lead weather presenter on BBC Breakfast.
Kirkwood received her meteorological training at The Weather Channel and joined the BBC in 1998. She initially worked for the BBC News channel and then added BBC One and other BBC outlets. Her popularity skyrocketed after she became the lead weather presenter.
Apart from her regular show, Kirkwood’s outside broadcasts include the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot, and royal events. She also delivered forecasts for Wimbledon and leading UK golf tournaments.
Jonathan Munro, the interim head of BBC News, singled out Carol Kirkwood’s contribution to the channel. “From major national moments to the everyday forecasts that are such an important part of our audiences’ lives, she has set the gold standard for our accurate, valued journalism – always delivered with an appropriately sunny outlook,” Munro said of Kirkwood’s “exceptional” contribution. “She will be greatly missed by teams across the BBC. We wish her all the best for the future,” he added (via Deadline).
Kirkwood added, “It’s been an absolute privilege to bring you the weather every day. My job is something I’ve never taken for granted, and I’ve loved every minute! From early starts and all manner of forecasts, I’ve shared it with incredible colleagues at BBC Breakfast, BBC Weather, and programmes across the BBC. I’d like to thank them for their support and friendship, which has meant the world.”
She concluded by thanking all the viewers who watched her for so long.
