Veteran Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon warned her fans about scammers using her name and likeness to commit fraud online. The Cruel Intentions star assured fans that she would never ask anything of them and warned against engaging with anyone pretending to be her.
What Reese Witherspoon said about scammers
In a recent TikTok video, veteran actress Reese Witherspoon addressed a surge in online scams involving people impersonating her to extract money and personal information from users.
In the video she shared on TikTok, Witherspoon said, “Hey, this is important, I want to just tell you what I’ve been dealing with for the past 24 hours.” She continued, “There are multiple people on TikTok and Instagram impersonating me, and they go into people’s DMs, and they try to build a relationship, they try to extract personal information, plan meet up times.”
This type of scam has become increasingly common in recent years. It has been particularly with fraudsters impersonating celebrities to gain trust and exploit fans.
“I want you to know, this is not me. And it’s so upsetting that people would use my name to manipulate people, but I want you to know that I would never, ever manipulate you,” Witherspoon continued. She further stated that she “would never reach out to you for money, for private information, to create a meet up time.”
She concluded the video by saying, “If somebody’s talking to you, this is not just me. This is happening across the board, but it’s really upsetting to me that this is happening on such a large scale. So please be careful out there, and please know, I would never, never reach out to you to manipulate you or take anything from you, okay.”
Previously, other celebrities, including Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, and Tom Hanks, have also spoken out about scams. These involve the misuse of their names and likenesses.
