Nicholas Hoult Thought He Could Be a Better Superman Than David Corenswet

Nicholas Hoult opened up about his Superman co-star David Corenswet‘s performance during a promotional lie detector test for James Gunn’s new superhero film. Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor opposite Corenswet’s Superman, previously auditioned for the Man of Steel role himself.

The candid session revealed the actors’ honest thoughts about their characters, working together, and even humorous admissions about fibbing over their heights.

Nicholas Hoult comments on being a better Superman

Superman actor Nicholas Hoult does not mind revealing his honest thoughts about David Corenswet‘s “incredible” Superman performance. During a lie detector test for Vanity Fair, the duo shared rare insights into their dynamic.

The on-screen superhero (Corenswet) and his iconic villain (Hoult) also delved into what they thought of each other’s performance. Hoult has previously revealed that he also auditioned for the role of Superman, which ultimately went to Corenswet.

The actor asked if at any point during the filming he (Hoult) thought that he could do the role better. To which the Lex Luthor actor said, “yes.” He explained that it wasn’t particularly any scene.

The X-Men star noted, “I auditioned to play Superman. So I know how difficult it is to play that character. Actually, a majority of the time I was watching you, I was impressed by how easy you made it look.”

He further gushed over Corenswet’s “dynamic” performance, adding he was impressed to see what the latter brought to the “character.” He also admitted that there were lots of “other thoughts” in his mind when he answered that question truthfully.

Corenswet assured him that he would have been “astonished” if Hoult would have said “no” to that question. To which the latter affirmed, “majority of the time I’d be sitting there watching it going, ‘He is incredible; he is nailing it.'”

The Mad Max: Fury Road star later also says yes when Corenswet asks if he would like to take the Superman hero on the road and “swap roles” every night. Both agree that swapping roles could be “fun.”

Superman hits theaters on July 11. The new James Gunn movie has earned strong reviews, with an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
