CS Interview: Matt Damon on Playing The Martian

Matt Damon on The Martian and the next Jason Bourne movie

It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen Matt Damon on the big screen, almost as if he’s been stranded on a planet somewhere in space.

Of course, that was the case with Damon’s cameo in Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar last year, and it ended up being a precursor to an even more expansive outer space thriller in Ridley Scott’s movie version of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel The Martian.

In the movie, Matt Damon plays Mark Watney, a botanist on a discovery trip to the planet Mars who becomes stranded there after a storm hits his exploration party. As they try to evacuate, Watney is left behind, thought to be dead. It turns out that Watney survived and he finds himself all alone on Mars with limited supplies to last him the four years it will take them to send a rescue mission.

It’s an amazing film (read our review here) with an amazing cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Sean Bean and more as it glorifies the wonders of modern science as we watch Watney trying to figure out how to survive as the men and women of NASA try to figure out how to save him.

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival where ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with Damon, Ridley Scott and most of the cast.

Although Damon has been laying low, he’s actually been keeping busy, having recently reunited with Ben Affleck to bring back “Project Greenlight” for HBO, as well as reuniting with director Paul Greengrass for the fourth time with next year’s return to Jason Bourne, their first movie together since 2010’s Green Zone. We talked to Damon about the latter during our interview, which you can watch below.

The Martian opens nationwide on Friday, October 2 with previews on Thursday, October 1. Look for a lot more interviews with Ridley Scott and the rest of the cast next week!
