Watch: Ian McKellen Solves Sherlock Holmes’ Last Case in ‘Mr. Holmes’ Trailer

Sherlock Holmes has been around since 1887, and yet his popularity doesn’t wain. The character is a big player on the small-screen in “Sherlock” and also in the blockbuster circuit with Guy Ritchie‘s Mr. Holmes. As seen in the film’s latest trailer, Ian McKellen embodies the aging detective, who goes on what he presumes is his last mystery and tries to clear his name along the way.

As seen by this promo, Holmes (McKellen) returns from Japan in 1947, where he witnesses the devastation of nuclear warfare. In a remote seaside farmhouse, he plans to end his days tending to bees with brief company from a housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her son, Milo (Milo Parker), as he grows older and his mind deteriorates. Even with his weakening physic, he still has the drive to revisit an unsolved case that forced him into retirement and relies on the young Roger to help him complete his task.

The new film is slated to hit theaters in limited release on July 17. This is just the beginning of Condon/McKellen’s work relationship, as they two also got together to film Disney’s upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast, where the actor plays the clock Cogsworth.
