One of the big hits out of Sundance this year was Rick Famuyiwa‘s Dope, the story of Malcolm (Shameik Moore), a young man carefully surviving life in Inglewood, California while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself. Co-stars include The Grand Budapest Hotel star Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Blake Anderson, Zoë Kravitz and rapper A$AP Rocky.
Dope won the editing award at Sundance and this first trailer seeks to prove why as it highlights the film’s much-talked about energy through video games and head-bobbing beats. The film hits theaters on June 19 and I’m looking forward to seeing.
