Someone Gave Ryan Gosling Some Money and He Made a Purple Fever Dream

Warner Bros. has decided a day-and-date release of Ryan Gosling‘s feature directorial debut is the best route as Lost River will be hitting limited theaters and digital HD on April 10 after its North American premiere at the SWSX Film Festival. I can understand this after skimming through the trailer, which looks like a someone honing their skills, experimenting visually and turning in some striking images, though early reviews suggest it doesn’t really all come together.

The short synopsis tells us this is a fantasy thriller in which a single mother is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town. The longer version gives us a little more detail:

Lost River is a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, Billy (Christina Hendricks), a single mother of two, is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together. Her teenage son Bones (Iain De Casestecker) discovers a mystery about the origins of Lost River that triggers his curiosity and sets into motion an unexpected journey that will test his limits and the limits of those he loves.

The film stars Christina Hendricks, Ben Mendelsohn, Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan, Iain De Caestecker, Eva Mendes and Barbara Steele.
