It seems like there is no stopping Kevin Hart. He already has three movies released this year, and he is in Top Five by Chris Rock, which comes out later this year after a very strong premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Then, in January, we get The Wedding Ringer. In typical January fashion, this looks like a freight train to the face, and I mean that in a bad way.
Hart plays a man who hires himself out to be best man at guys’ weddings because they have no actual friends. He is hired by Josh Gad to not only be his best man but to help him find all seven of his groomsmen. Now, I am just taking a stab in the dark here, but I am guessing Hart and Gad end up being best friends by the end. It seems like a radical idea, but I take risks, people. The film also features Kaley Cuoco, Cloris Leachman, Mimi Rogers, Whitney Cummings, and Jennifer Lewis.
I do not understand the Kevin Hart phenomenon. I mostly find him irritating. The worse his material is, the more he screams through it. And he screams. A lot. It is especially problematic if he is given a lead role, which is the case here. In the trailer, I could not figure out why anything was supposed to be funny, which is probably not what they were going for.
It is nice to see Josh Gad get some work, it’s just too bad it’s this. A bad movie can be fun to watch. A bad comedy is torture. This looks like it will be that, but I’ve been wrong before. Very rarely, but it happens.
You can watch the trailer below if you’re feeling brave.
