Watch: New Full Trailer for ‘The Purge: Anarchy’

Universal released a new trailer for their upcoming sequel The Purge: Anarchy, hitting theaters on July 18 as the studio wasted no time in getting the sequel to the surprise financial (the quality was certainly suspect) 2013 hit.

Starring Frank Grillo and Keith Stanfield (Short Term 12), the film once again takes place in a not-so-distant future where one night in an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity–including murder–becomes legal.

The film is once again directed by James DeMonaco and like I’ve said before, I think it would have been much better had the sequel actually focused on the day after The Purge rather than do the same thing all over again. After all, it’s one thing to document the chaos, but to take a look at the scene 24 hours after so much mayhem has ensued, exploring how people deal with what they did or even what those around them did, would be far more interesting. Just think, one day you see your neighbor murder someone… are you really going to trust him/her ever again?
